Soy protein improves intestinal inflammatory diseases

Include soy protein in the diet can help relieve symptoms of the inflammatory intestinal diseases, such as inflammation of the colon, as it has revealed a study with mice by a team of researchers from the Pennsylvania State University (United States), which was published in The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry.

The scientists observed that soy protein concentrate had an antioxidant effect and cytoprotective on human intestine cells grown in laboratory

Chronic inflammation of the colon that characterizes pathologies of the bowel such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, and which in turn causes the loss of the intestinal barrier function and increases the permeability of the bowel, is considered the risk factor more important to develop colon cancer, hence the relevance of the finding.

The authors of the new study examined the effect of concentrate of soy protein on inflammation and barrier function bowel in a group of mice, which replaced 12% of the source of protein in their diet with concentrated said; an amount that is equivalent to the dose that you would provide in the case of human beings because, as explained by Zachary Bitzer, one of the researchers, they wanted to check if the results could be adapted to a situation with people.

The trial demonstrated that in the mouse models which is an inflammatory bowel disease had induced this simple change in food got slow weight loss and improve the swelling of the spleen, reduce markers of inflammation of the colon and intestinal barrier function loss. In addition, the scientists observed that soy protein concentrate had an antioxidant effect and cytoprotective on human intestine cells grown in the laboratory.

The consumption of soy health benefits

Previous studies had already pointed out that the regular consumption of soy has benefits for health; in fact, this legume has been associated with a reduction in the risk of developing some types of cancer, among other salutary effects, although the results of other studies have not been conclusive.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania intended to determine if the anti-inflammatory effects that have been discovered are due only to soy protein, or if the fiber containing plays an important role in this. These experts also explained that new studies are needed to confirm that the results of their research can play in human beings, although they believe that this will be easy because currently already available foods containing soy protein and are used as meat substitutes.
