Very few are those who choose to meditate, a very healthy habit that hides multiple benefits for our physical and mental health.

Meditation is a practice whereby we try to take control over ourselves, silence the mind and achieve another state of consciousness . There are many esoteric schools that refer to this practice and propose different ways of achieving it.

As in any other activity, we will need practice, patience and perseverance to achieve results, as it is increasingly difficult to achieve the right situation, especially in cities and with the pace we carry throughout the day.

The key to starting to meditate is to get a dark and silent space . What for some people is something easy to achieve for most is an almost impossible task: life in the city, the rest of the family, neighbors, the street, barking dogs, etc. Obstacles always appear when we set out to meditate.

When we can silence the mind for a while each day we can begin to notice some benefits:

  • We will wake up with more energy and better humor.
  • We will reduce the disorders of the nervous system, such as stress, anxiety or depression.
  • We will achieve greater self-control over ourselves.
  • We will be more focused and have a better memory capacity.
  • We can make better decisions.

Meditation techniques

To start learning to leave the mind blank we can follow different techniques. Once we are in the dark and silent place we can choose one of these three exercises:

The breathing

Breathing is a wonderful tool to start working on meditation and to improve health . Unfortunately, most of us forget to breathe with all the capacity we have, rather we do a superficial and rapid breathing.

The simple act of breathing with slowness and tranquility, pending only inspiration and exhalation, feeling the movement of the belly, the diaphragm and the chest, is an excellent exercise in meditation.

Focus on a candle

Although we will be in the dark, we can use a candle as a point of concentration . We will avoid any kind of thinking while looking directly at the candle and observing all its details: the flame, the movement, the profile, the sound, the light that gives off, etc. 

Body Display

This meditation will be performed lying down or sitting comfortably. We will close our eyes and we will visualize our body at the same time that we concentrate on relaxing each part in which we think .

We will start at the feet and finish in the head. We will do it with as much detail as possible including, if desired, internal organs.

The first few times you will notice difficulty in doing these exercises that seem simple. It is possible for you to deconcentrate easily and to appear all kinds of thoughts. Do not lose hope and have perseverance. Doing it for a while each day before bedtime you will progressively achieve and you will get all the benefits we have mentioned.
