There is no specific data that determines where the yogurt originates. However,  there are theories that indicate that it arose in Eastern Europe , 4500 years ago.

At present we find a huge list of brands and varieties of yogurts. Thanks to its nutritional contribution, yogurt has taken on great importance.

Among its nutrients we find:

  •  Proteins
  • Lipids
  • Carbohydrates
  •  Vitamins
  •  Minerals

These allow a better absorption of food, because they favor intestinal transit.

But how is Greek yogurt? It is characterized by a color between white and cream, with a soft texture and a peculiar sour taste,  ie the mixture between cream and cottage cheese.

It has a high high protein content that causes a satiety effect.

It is the result of putting the traditional yogurt under pressure until eliminating the moisture content. This removes the liquid whey, which is why the consistency is thicker and with less sugars.

Benefits

Suitable for people with lactose intolerance

Greek yogurt has a low level of lactose compared to other dairy products.

The reason? The fermentation process maintains live and active cultures that are responsible for converting lactose to lactic acid , which is much easier to absorb.

However, it is important to consider the level of lactose intolerance individually, as there are people who can cause side effects.

Improves digestion

This yogurt is very easy to digest because it contains less carbohydrates than the rest of the yogurts.

It also contains healthy probiotics and bacteria that work by removing residues from food that attach to the intestinal walls.

Calcium source

Like other dairy products, Greek yogurt also adds calcium to the body.

  • This helps prevent  diseases such as osteoporosis and other bone problems , as it strengthens bones and allows them to absorb nutrients better.
  • In the meantime, calcium regulates the nervous and muscular system. Therefore, when there is a deficiency of this mineral we experience cramps or numbness in the fingers, as well as cardiac irregularities.

Weightloss

Generally, Greek yogurt is lower in fat than the rest, in addition to providing large amounts of protein.

  • That is, this yogurt has less sugar and therefore fewer calories.
  • Not to mention that the protein gives a feeling of satiety for long periods, avoiding that you consume high snacks in carbohydrates.

The intake of Greek yogurt increases the amount of white blood cells, which are responsible for combating bacterial and viral infections.

Probiotics also help us, since live cultures improve the community of beneficial bacteria found in the intestine, preventing other harmful bacteria from implanting and forming pathogens.

Reduces cholesterol levels

Greek yogurt works as a natural treatment for cholesterol.

  • It contains Lactobacillus Acidophilus , a beneficial bacterium that acts against the endogenous synthesis of bad cholesterol (LDL).
  • This bacteria reduces the substances that pass through the bloodstream. In this way, when they reach the liver, the same amount of cholesterol is no longer formed.

Greek or normal yogurt?

The next time you choose a yogurt for your pantry, take into account the qualities of Greek yogurt:

  • It has a higher percentage of protein. More than 6 grams per 100 grams. That is, twice as much as a normal yogurt.
  • It is obtained from whey, reducing lactose and therefore, has fewer carbohydrates and sugars.
  • It is ideal to add it to your dishes and substitute it with other more caloric ingredients because it does not settle when subjected to high temperatures.
  • Greek yogurt is naturally low in lactose.
  • It is considered a vegetarian product , unless you add gelatin (animal collagen).

Actually the two types of yogurts are good for the body. However, it is recommended to consume it naturally, where it does not go through a conservation process  or have flavorings or coloring.

It should be noted that a 220 g serving of yogurt provides more than 25% calcium than a cup of milk.
