But although its preparation can be simple, especially when we catch the trick, also depending on the variety that we are going to prepare its cooking will be different, so it is not always possible to follow the same steps that for example we followed for the elaboration of a concrete variety.

The well-known  basmati rice  (also simply known as basmati ) is a variety of rice that is characterized by being  long grain, exquisite flavor and delicate fragrance or aroma . In fact, its name in Hindi (बासमती) would come to mean “queen of the fragrances”, by the aroma that it gives off.

It is a variety of rice come directly from India , where it has been cultivated for hundreds of years. In fact, the one that comes from the hills of the Himalayas is considered one of the best, where it is common for the rice to grow old for some years before being husked and finally put on sale. This ensures that its aroma is more concentrated and has less water.

However, this does not prevent that  in most cases it is advisable to wash the basmati rice in abundant cold water before cooking , to avoid that the rice grains come together as a result of its high content of the starch.

If cooked well basmati rice tends not to be stickyand has the peculiarity that it tends to become even longer while cooking.

Cooking basmati rice can be simple from the moment you pick the point to the cooking . Therefore, just follow the steps we propose below. We will use 200 grams of basmati rice, 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, half a liter of water (1/2) and a half small spoonful of fine salt (1/2):

  1. Soaking for 2 hours:  First we will soak the basmati grains. In this way we will make them less likely to break during cooking, so the result will be much better. To do this, put water in a bowl and soak the grains that you prepare for 2 hours.
  2. Wash them under the water:  After this time we will proceed to wash the rice grains in abundant cold water. To do this we put the rice in a fine mesh strainerand put it under the jet of cold water, rinsing well for 2 minutes. This way we will get the rice to release the excess starch. Then let it drain well.
  3. Now put the olive oil in a saucepan or pan and heat over medium heat. Then add the drained basmati rice and mix well with the oil, using a wooden spoon.
  4. Leave to heat for 30 seconds, stirring constantly. Now add half a liter of water and raise the fire. When the water begins to boil add the fine salt, cover the pan, lower the fire to a minimum and let the rice cook for 13 minutes, with the saucepan covered.
  5. After this time you just have to check that the basmati rice has cooked perfectly. Turn the fire off and go! Let’s enjoy it.

Like any variety of rice,  basmati rice possesses high amounts of starch , which can influence when the grains come together and stick together.

However, basmati rice has the advantage of having a smaller amount, especially if it is the most acclaimed variety in which its grains are allowed to age for some years. If we choose this variety we will be assured that when they are cooked they will not stick.

In addition, there are some simple tips or tricks that will help you make the cooking result even better. Take note:

  • Wash them beforehand:  As with any other type of rice, it is advisable to thoroughly wash the basmati beans under a stream of cold water, just before cooking.
  • Let them soak:  Letting them soak between one to two hours before their cooking will help that the grains of enough are broken less during the cooking.
