The suppository is a type of medication (since it contains one or more active principles which are incorporated into a non-irritating excipient), with a solid consistency and generally with a rounded and conical shape at one of its ends, which is introduced through the rectum.

Generally they have a length that does not surpass the 4 centimetersand a weight that usually oscillates between 1 to 3 grams. Although we can currently find different medications at our usual suppository- type pharmacy , it may be helpful to know how to make suppositories easily at home using 100 percent natural ingredients.

What is a suppository and what is it for?

suppository consists basically of a  drug or drug with a conical shape , which is introduced into the anus as medical treatment, fundamentally because it has the capacity to finally fuse into the rectum.

Specifically, they are introduced in the anus by containing different substances and compounds that help in their application. For example, they are usually made usually with glycerin or with cocoa butter.   • Suppositories with local action: they  are useful for example for the treatment of hemorrhoids or piles.
  • Suppositories with laxative effect: they  are especially useful for the treatment of constipation.

How to make a suppository at home

Although different options exist to prepare them, a suppository is usually prepared by mixing the powder of the herb or medicinal plant to be used and a base such as cocoa butter, giving it the appropriate shape and molding it.

Ingredients needed to make the home suppository:

  • Aqueous extract of the plant (whether in infusion, tincture or decoction): 35 parts.
  • Gelatin: 10 parts.
  • Glycerin: 14 parts.

Preparation of the home suppository:

  1. First, make the infusion, tincture or decoction of the plant or herb that you are going to use.
  2. Soak the gelatin with the resulting infusion for 5 or 10 minutes.
  3. Heat the mixture a little in a saucepan until the gelatin dissolves.
  4. Add the glycerin and heat the whole mixture to the water bath.
  5. The glycerin must evaporate completely, which will allow a more solid consistency.
  6. Now use the mold to pour the mixture over itand store it in the refrigerator for the time it will be used.

Contraindications of home suppositories (and warnings)

Never suppository should be used when there is intestinal obstruction or inflammations or perforations in the intestine, since not only could not solve the condition, but could also aggravate them.

On the other hand  home suppositories should not be administered to infants or children , without the obvious medical prescription. In addition, glycerin suppositories commonly found in pharmacies can not be used for more than seven days, unless there is a proper medical prescription.
