We are often stressed from everyday life, work and household responsibilities.

We have decided to give a turn to our life by doing an extra activity that allows us to find the much longed for feeling of relaxation. In this, we are going through a fairly common dilemma: yoga or meditation.

Certainly, this decision is not simple and it becomes much more complex when we do not have the right information.

The media and popular culture in general place both disciplines as the cream of the anti-stress struggle.

However,  both have their differences and are intended for completely different audiences … What is the activity that generates greater peace of mind? Let’s see.

Meditation: means for relaxation and spiritual growth

Yoga or meditation? What is the most reassuring activity?

Meditation comprises a fairly large group of practices aimed at people’s personal , mental and spiritual growth .

Experts from different cultures understand it as self-training to reach states of high understanding and behavior.

Reflection, contemplative thinking and mastery of emotions are its main objectives in almost all cultures. For this there are many schools, disciplines and techniques.

From this perspective, we must understand it as one more discipline within the meditative tendencies of Hinduism.

We speak of only one way of finding satisfaction, peace of mind and ultimately, relaxation of the practitioner.

Yoga: relaxation by mastering the body and postures

Yoga is a Hindu discipline or school where meditation and of course, the feeling of relaxation are implicit.

This millenary practice has its origin in India and includes the control of the mind through the domain of the body.

For that reason, its practitioners resort to postures, figures and levels of intensity that increase with learning.

The idea is to master the movement and have total body control while achieving reflective and calm states.

Perhaps one of its advantages with respect to traditional meditation techniques is that it works directly with the body . This fact can guarantee a little exercise and involve more of its practitioners.

Yoga or meditation? Each person is simply different

Yoga or meditation? What is the most reassuring activity?

Choosing between yoga or meditation does not have to do only with knowing the characteristics of each discipline. Rather, the important thing is to verify the mental and bodily skills, as well as the circumstances of each individual .

People a little more unemployed, such as the elderly population, will have more time to practice the postures and go surpassing themselves.

Maybe the same happens with fitness lovers and other similar profiles. In addition, the tastes and motivations will be definitive in our choice.

What has better effects to lower blood pressure and stress?

Blood pressure and tension states can be controlled when we experience sensations that evoke peace, tranquility and pleasure.

According to this, both yoga and other meditation exercises can achieve this type of positive effects in the body.

Scientific research suggests that both activities have the ability to reassure us . And that can be seen in some indicators that are used to measure our state of health.

And on a psychological level … Yoga or meditation?

According to a psychological perspective this can also be quite relative.

In fact, everything will depend on the type of patient and the disorder that you want to work with . For example, a person who is hyperactive will find a different stimulation in each practice.

However, if it is about working the mentality and moods of a patient facing some type of disability, obviously yoga will not be an adequate alternative.

The fact of not being able to complete the postures can act negatively on the self-esteem of the practitioner. Music therapy or breathing may work.

So,  once again, the most important criterion seems to be the personal one and not the differences between each one. Both work with breathing, reflection, muscle relaxation and above all, are part of the meditation in a broad sense.

Yoga or meditation? … As a good Hindu teacher would say, all roads lead to the same destination.

Everything will depend on the problem we wish to address, the approach to work it and of course, our reality and personal preferences.
