What is bichectomy?

The bichectomy is a treatment of facial esthetics which consists of the removal of structures called Bichat adipose balls , which consist of two compartments of fat that are inside each of the cheeks, very close to the muscles of the chewing.

The presence of the Bichat fat ball is not indispensable for the body since its function is scarce, being more useful theoretically during the first years because it can facilitate the chewing and sucking of the babies. Because of this and the aesthetic results that can be obtained, its extirpation has become popular in recent years.

What are the results of bichectomy?

The bichectomy is indicated for those who seek to thin the contour of their face and generally, is recommended for people who despite diets and exercises continue to have a rounded face, making them appear more weight.

Removal of the Bichat adipose balls results in thinning the lower third of the face, which also implies a greater projection of the cheekbones and a more elongated appearance of the face.

How bichectomy is performed

Bichectomy is a relatively simple procedure that is usually performed by cosmetic or maxillofacial surgeons. Most are performed under local anesthesia , although it can also perform under sedation.

The approach occurs from the inside of the mouth. The surgeon will make a small cut on the inside of the cheek in the area next to where the adipose ball is usually located, and once it is located, it will slowly pull it until complete extraction and then suture the wound. It is a quick procedure, which hardly lasts more than an hour to complete.

The recovery can take up to 14 days , depending on the response of each person. The inflammation after the procedure, although it may be somewhat striking, is perfectly normal, although as a result of it the results of the procedures can not be seen until after a few days. During the first three days a soft and cold diet is recommended, avoiding physical exertion and going out in the sun to avoid bleeding.

What are the complications of bichectomy?

Although it is a simple procedure, just like any other surgery there is a possibility of complications occurring. The most common one may be the nonconformity with the results , since often the procedure may not be suitable for those who is not an appropriate procedure because of their facial characteristics.

Facial features may also cause certain people to have, over time, an appearance of premature aging or face sneezing. That is why patients should go to surgeons who have a lot of experience with this procedure.

Other less common consequences are those involved in the surgical procedure as such. Due to the proximity of Bichat adipose balls to various anatomical structures, there is a certain risk of damaging them by producing important complications, such as facial paralysis and facial pain by damaging the facial nerve, haemorrhage from facial artery damage, or An alteration in the secretion of saliva to injure the excretory duct of one of the major salivary glands, called parotid. However, in the hands of experienced doctors in this procedure, the risk of occurrence of these complications is extremely low.
