What is the gastric balloon

The gastric balloon is a procedure that is intended to help a person lose weight. It consists of a silicone sphere that resists the acids of the stomach, which is introduced into the stomach through endoscopy. The person loses weight because the ball occupies a space in the stomach and makes the person feel full without a lot of food and without anxiety.

Once the gastric balloon is placed the diet for the person should contain many foods that keep the person healthy, it should be a balanced and varied diet. This is done with the intention that the stomach and intestines are free of debris before the implantation of the balloon.

Once the gastric balloon has been placed, the patient must follow a specific diet to be able to tolerate the food that is consumed. In the first two days the patient should take liquid to hydrate , since it is normal for the patient to vomit after placement, this is because the stomach feels the presence of a foreign body and the way to try to dislodge it is through vomiting, which calms down after two days.

The rigorous diet after the second day will be divided into phases and will last one week each , these phases are:

  • Liquid phase : this is the first phase to be performed once the gastric balloon has been implanted. The person will consume liquid foods and in cold form so that they are not irritating and do not induce the vomit.
  • Semiliquid phase : it is the post-liquid phase, here the patient should consume food in a semi-liquid form, including yogurt, broths, puree (of watery vegetables)and so on. This with the intention of the person getting accustomed again to food intake with some consistency.
  • Pasty phase : the patient begins to eat vegetable puree but accompanied by crushed protein, such as meat, chicken, fish and egg. In addition the patient can eat fruits of the same form in puree and jams.
  • Normal phase : the patient should start with the normal process of chewing, however, the food should have a soft consistency so that the stomach can properly digest it, such as rice, stewed meat, pasta, vegetables, eggs, fish, etc. This is for the purpose that the stomach begin to tolerate the food again.

It is important that once the patient enters the normal phase is followed up with a nutritionist, so that as time goes by indicate how to continue eating. However, once the normal phase passes the person can eat everything that is proposed but in a healthy way, that is why it requires the help of the specialist.
